Deanery ChallengeChrist The King
On Sunday March 24th 1996, 25 people from the Christ The King Youth Group in Geelong headed to Xavier College Junior School in Melbourne to take part in the annual Deanery Fun Run Challenge. The day commenced at 11:00 am and finished at 3:30 pm. During this time participants were permitted to walk, jog, or run as many laps of the 500m track as they wanted, but under the condition that only six runners per parish were allowed on the track at any one time. All runners were numbered and it was the responsibility of each runner to call out their number and make sure that their lap was recorded each time they passed their team officials. The day was an excellent way of having fun, keeping fit, and making new friends all at the same time. And if running wasnt really your cup of tea, then you could try some of the many activities and stalls which included basketball, handball, tug-of-war, mini golf and food stalls galore. Christ The King decided to be a bit daring and instead of holding the usual hot dog or cake stall we decided to hold a pancake stall. Even though it wasnt a huge success, it was great fun cooking up mini masterpieces. Amazingly enough to our surprise, Christ The King hit the track hard and fast right from the word go! With the loud music of the mobile disco blaring away in our ears, Christ The King blitzed the pack taking out the award for the most laps by a parish . . . An amazing 765 laps (382.5 km to be exact!) Overall, the day was a tremendous success allowing us to collect a substantial amount of money to help fund the C.T.K Youth Group. Everyone put in a huge amount of effort, considering that there was such tough competition. With 1996 being so successful, well be aiming at having an even stronger team competing in the 1997 Deanery Fun Run Challenge. (Lily Tsen, Year 9 - Christ The King Youth Group) LaraAt the 1996 Deanery Challenge, Geelong won the shield for the most laps by a Deanery. In the parishes section, Lara came second by 20 laps. This year we had extremely good weather compared to last year. Many people around Lara and in the Parish sponsored us and we raised enough money to buy the pool table that the Youth Group wanted. On the fun run, Lara was the only team with a banner, There were games to play like mini golf, tug of war and a hand ball game and the parishes all joined together which was great fun. The amount of money we raised was just over $500 and we are very grateful for all the parish support. Chris Schepers and Louise Gayner
