Profile: Denise James, Deanery Resource Co-ordinator

Denise has been married to Kevin for 25 years. They have 3 adult children: Kim who is overseas at present, Karen who works in NSW, and Michael who is studying at RMIT in Bundoora. Denise is a primary school teacher who has worked in several parish schools around Geelong.

Having been very involved in St Bernard’s Parish over a number of years, Denise decided to change her career direction and began studying for her Associate Diploma in Pastoral Ministry at the Catholic Pastoral Formation Centre in Melbourne. After 4 years of part-time study, Denise has become an accredited pastoral associate in the Melbourne Archdiocese.

While completing her course Denise worked at Holy Family, Bell Park for a year and St Bernard’s Belmont for 3 years as Sacramental Co-ordinator. She then took up a full-time position at St Thomas Aquinas, Norlane, working with Fr Colin Bourke as pastoral associate for just over 4 years.

Denise has enjoyed her work at Norlane and hopes to bring some of her people skills, ‘hands-on’ experience and vision for the future church to her new role as Deanery Resource Co-ordinator.

Denise will work 19 hours a week in this new role, which is to focus on resourcing parishes in the Deanery for the up-coming Jubilee and developing Small Christian Communities as a possible way forward for the church of the future.

Denise is looking forward to the challenge, as well as hoping to improve her golfing and badminton skills, and spend more time in the garden in her spare time!
