Deanery Profile: Helen LynchBorn of Irish parents, the second of four children, I grew up in Hawthorn, Melbourne in the shadow of the football ground. Along with becoming a staunch Irish Catholic I was also an enthusiastic supporter of the mighty Hawks, during all those years when the latter remained at the bottom of the ladder. Having been taught by the Brigidine sisters during my primary and secondary years, I eventually joined them. For many years I was engaged in teaching and administration in Brigidine secondary schools in Victoria and South Australia after which I became a member of the Religious Education Department at the Australian Catholic University for ten years. During 199798, I was involved in parish ministry in England and I also enjoyed the opportunity to visit my Irish relatives. 1999 has brought me to the parish of Corio/Lara with my Brigidine friend, Mary Brady. She is the Corio Community Leader, while I have a similar role in Lara. We have been warmly welcomed by Fr Denis and the parish team. At present I am enjoying the friendliness of the parishioners, and their willingness to help as they introduce me to the local scene. |
