The Knights of the Southern Cross

The Knights of the Southern Cross received its charter to operate in Geelong on 1 August 1922.

Geelong was one of the early branches of the Knights in Victoria and Catholic men flocked to it in order to right the economic and employment imbalance of Catholics that was evident in the early part of this century.

Thankfully these conditions are not widespread at this time, due to changing conditions and the early efforts of the Knights. The main focus of the Knights has now shifted to fostering palliative care, supporting the education of priests, and engaging in community relations where it is perceived that the dignity of the individual is under threat. Also under our auspices are many aged-care facilities and packages that are all operating in Geelong and throughout Victoria.

But above all this, there is in the Knights the warmth of brotherhood given from one member to another, which is felt within. To explain this feeling is difficult, to experience it is real.

All the Knights’ actions are under the aegis of the Objects of the Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross. These are:

  1. To promote the advancement of Australia.
  2. To foster the Christian way of life throughout the nation.
  3. To promote the welfare of its members and their families.
  4. To encourage social and intellectual activities among its members.
  5. To conduct and support educational, charitable, religious and social welfare work.
