40th Anniversary of St Therese Church, Torquay

In the year 2000, St Therese of Lisieux Church, Surfcoast Highway, Torquay will celebrate it’s 40th anniversary. The focal point will be a Thanksgiving Mass on Sunday, 23 January 2000, at 3 pm, followed by afternoon tea and a memorabilia display.

All past and present parishioners and holiday-makers are warmly invited to attend and celebrate this milestone. Some of the earlier milestones of St Therese church have been:

1958 Purchase of land and church building commenced in July

1959 First Mass celebrated in church by Fr Duggan in July

1960 Official opening, blessing and dedication on 24 January

By happy coincidence, the year 2000 has also been declared a ‘Great Jubilee’ by the Church throughout the world. It is an ancient tradition that calls for renewal of faith, for forgiveness and for celebrating one’s spiritual home. Genuine celebration of our 40th anniversary in Torquay will come from the way we choose to allow the love of God, visible in Jesus, to come alive in ourselves and in our relationships in this community.

If anyone has any photographs and/or information of some of the earlier milestones contact Bryan Southall on 5264 1581 (ah) and for further information phone Parish House on 5243 9891.
