Pregnancy Help Geelong
Pregnancy Help Geelong (PHG) it is a crisis centre where women caught out with an unexpected pregnancy, have suffered a miscarriage or who are not coping with a previous abortion can go to receive counselling and support. Each year, two training courses are held for volunteers to enable them to become involved in counselling, education in schools or home support of young mothers. PHG provides an educational program in secondary schools led by a team of trained facilitators. The program is called Choices, Decisions, Outcomes, and its emphasis is on sexuality and relationships. The program has been presented to over 8000 students since 1994. PHG is an independent, non-profit, non-government, non-denominational organisation that relies on the generosity of the Geelong community for donations for its ongoing work in this region. PHG offers in-house support for young parenting women who may be struggling with the challenges of a new baby. Caring, trained volunteers offer support and are concerned for the health, safety and emotional wellbeing of these young mothers and their children. PHG is available 24-hours a day to offer counselling and support through the use of a mobile phone system. Any time a woman (or man) needs to talk to someone about a pregnancy-related issue, he/she is able to contact someone from the centre. Only those women who have been in the situation can really know the fear and confusion an unwanted pregnancy can bring. This is why a counsellor at PHG will allow a client to speak freely about their feelings and will not judge or condemn, even if she decides to terminate her pregnancy. It can be a difficult task to hold life-affirming views and yet remain non-judgmental when, for example, dealing with a young woman who wants to have an abortion because a baby would interrupt her career plans. We believe that abortion is rarely, if ever, the best solution to an unwanted pregnancy, and we would try to convey to the client the emotional, physical and spiritual consequences of taking that action. PHG can be contacted on 5223 2425. |
