Overheard Comments from the National Sorry Day Ceremonies, Geelong

‘I didn’t realise until a couple of years ago just how badly we whites had treated the Aborigines. I’m really pleased to have this opportunity to show publicly that I regret it.’

‘Have you a book that tells the whole tragic story truthfully?’

Mother to small son: ‘Here’s a badge darling. You’re wearing it because our family is sorry that the Aborigines in our country weren’t treated fairly always.’

Small son to mother: ‘I’m glad I have to wear a badge to show we’re sorry.’

Small child at face painting: ‘Do the Aborigines paint their faces because they’re happy we came to say sorry?’

At the camp fire, an Aborigine said, ‘I feel great hope in my heart tonight. When people say "Sorry" with their voices and mean it in their hearts like we see tonight, we can hope for real.’
