Annual Geelong Social Justice Lecture 1999The Geelong Catholic Social Justice Commissioner is pleased to announce that its Annual Social Justice will this year be presented by the recently appointed Social Justice Commissioner, Dr Bill Jonas. Dr Jonas will speak on Aboriginal Rights, addressing such matters as how they relate to international law, the obligations the United Nations Convention on Indigenous Peoples place on Australian governments, how the Australian governments response regarding the rights of indigenous peoples compares to that of other nations, and the Draft Document for Reconciliation, particularly as it relates to Aboriginal rights. Until his appointment as Social Justice Commissioner, Dr Jonas was Director of the National Museum of Australia and from 199196 was Principal of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies in Canberra. In the mid-1980s Dr Jonas was a Royal Commissioner on the Royal Commission into British Nuclear Tests in Australia with the late Justice Jim McClelland. Dr Jonas holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of NSW, a Master of Arts degree from the University of Newcastle and a PhD from the University of Papua New Guinea. In addition to his impressive professional qualifications, Dr Jonas has worked tirelessly in the community sector since the early 1980s. Dr Jonas commenced his appointment as Social Justice Commissioner on 6 April 1999 for five years.
